BUK 1st University in Nigeria To Award Degree In Hausa - Prof. Gusau

Bayero University Kano is the pioneer University in the country to award a degree in Hausa Studies. This was disclosed by Professor Saidu Muhammad Gusau, a senior lecturer in the Department of Nigerian Languages. Professor Gusau, who is a Professor of Hausa, was speaking during a special lecture on course Hau 3302: a Critical Study of Hausa Oral Poets organised by Level Three students of the department.
He said the University began to award Degrees in Hausa Studies since 1962 when BUK was affiliated to Ahmadu Bello University, (ABU) Zaria.
Professor Gusau said Hausa Studies were divided into three - Hausa Language, Hausa Culture and Hausa Literature, saying that under Hausa Literature, which is course 3302, it tried to look into the historical background of some Hausa Musicians.
He further stated that every year students of this course would take 6 to 10 Hausa musicians and study their life history. As part of studying the practical aspect of the course, one or two musicians are usually invited to come and address the students.
Professor Gusau said this year the class invited Alhaji Sunusi Shata, the son of the late legendary musician, Mamman Shata Katsina, and Alhaji Hamsabi Shatan Zamfara who came and addressed the students. He further stated that all of them were trying to emulate the late Mamman Shata in their songs.
Professor Yusuf Adamu, the Director, Bayero University Press, and Professor Isah Mukhtar of Nigerian Languages thanked Professor Sa’idu Muhammad Gusau for leading the students that organised this lecture.
